Our History

The club was established in 1888 on land leased from Levens Park. Records show that the base layers of the green consisted of clinker and ash from the old gasworks topped with various grades of stone, gravel and sand, which gives the green excellent drainage.

The original specification was that the centre should be 14 inches above the edges. The current difference is unknown.

Annual fees at that time were 5 shillings for gentlemen and 2.6d for others. In 1936 club members joined together to purchase the land from the Levens Estate for the princely sum of £100.

In the mid 1970s, a permanent clubhouse was built, largely thanks to members’ efforts. In 2011, members raised over £12,000 to provide disabled access and add bathroom facilities to the rear of the clubhouse.

Thanks mainly to a generous grant from Sport England, a new greens maintenance machine was purchased in 2012 which, together with hard work from successive groundsmen, has significantly improved the playing surface of the green.

The pathway to the club from the nearby A6 was purchased in 2013 and a new path completed in 2014. Both projects were completed with help from The National Lottery Fund, CWMET and other charitable organisations.

The grounds maintenance machine was replaced in 2020 and a wide range of ground improvements commenced to the boundary fences in 2021 with further improvements planned and ongoing.
